Inwards and Onwards - through the eyes of Anton Corbijn

On June 23rd Amsterdam photography museum FOAM unclosed an exhibition of selected photographs by Anton Corbijn – inwards and onwards. This most recent project of Corbjin includes some of his favourite artists such as Gerhard Richter, Alexander McQueen, Richard Prince, Iggy Pop, Anselm Kiefer, Damien Hirst, Tom Waits, Peter Doig, Bruce Springsteen, Lucian Freud and Karel Appel. Within a scope of four rooms you can get insight into selected works.

Enjoy your late summer evenings with the best films from Africa and the African Diaspora! From August 28 till September 11, film festival Africa in the Picture (AITP) is in town with its open air screenings. Free entrance for all films!

On August 28 (Westerpark- parkside Cinema The Ketelhuis) and September 5 (community Centre De Havelaar) London River will be shown: a film about the encounter between the British Elisabeth (Brenda Blethyn) and the African Ousmane (Sotigui Kouyate), both looking for their children after the bloody bombings in the London Underground in 2005. For this film Kouyate was awarded the Silver Bear for best actor.

With films about Senegalese mbalax and Afro-American soul, Africa in the Picture guarantees a real musical film explosion! September 3 (August Allebeplein) and September 10 (Makassarplein) you can see the film Youssou N'Dour. I Bring What I Love : the award-winning documentary in which the Senegalese pop sensation Youssou N'Dour is being followed in his life as a musician and Muslim. On September 4 (Olympic Stadium) and September 11 (Wittenburgerplein) it's time for SOUL POWER with Jeffry Levy-Hintes documentary about the legendary concert in 1974 on the background of Muhammad Ali's Rumble in the Jungle in Kinshasa, Zaire. A lively recording of one of the most mythical gigs ever, featuring BB King, Celia Cruz and the Godfather of Soul James Brown! A must-see for every soul fan!

Amsterdam Sunsets Film Festival

Although this summer’s weather has left the Dutchmen in the lurch so far, the city apparently does not intend on cancelling the open-air film event of the year. The Sunsets Fillm Festival looks back on 23 successful years during which it has established itself a name as a real open-air institution, realized by the EYE Film Institute in the Vondelpark, Amsterdam.
