BIMHUIS PROGRAMME SEPTEMBER 2009 Print E-mail
Aug 23, 2009 at 03:32 PM

The Bimhuis, the Amsterdam City supported Jazz concert house provides a perspective on Dutch and international music in over 300 concerts annually, in which a variety of jazz and improvised music can be enjoyed. The focus is on new developments, but the Bimhuis also offers a significant selection of more mainstream music.

Here is the Bimhuise program as it was sent to Amsterdam Spoke for the month of September 09

The new Bimhuis season starts with a series of concerts by the legendary ICP Orchestra. The ensemble, which operates somewhere between rudimentary jazz and contemporary improvisation, will basically play one big concert spread out over four evenings. This is the ultimate opportunity for fans and newbies alike to hear live performances of the most important compositions by pianist Misha Mengelberg and his band mates.

‘Improvisation is like daily life ... like crossing the street', said drummer Han Bennink in Downbeat. ICP, which Bennink founded 40 years ago with Mengelberg, could be compared to a jazz orchestra from New Orleans crossing a busy street in New York. Even though Mengelberg tries to hinder them with his rowdy piano playing, the ten members manage to reach the other side every time without a scratch.

Inspired by Fluxus, the movement that created art out of everyday life, Bennink, Mengelberg and saxophonist Willem Breuker founded the Instant Composers Pool in the 1960s. The absurdist improvisation company gradually evolved into an international orchestra of eccentric virtuosos that evokes praise all over the world.

Now, more than 25 years later, it is high time to overwhelm a new generation. ‘The missing link between Jimi Hendrix and Wes Montgomery on one hand, between P-Funk and Mississippi Fred McDowell on the other' (Village Voice).
