At the start of a new concert season, from September 2 to 5, the Bimhuis welcomes you for a unique concert series: four days of the ICP ORCHESTRA - the ultimate chance to experience the celebrated orchestra live, with a broad repertoire ranging from Ellington to Monk and from Mengelberg to Moore. Directly after this concert marathon the Bimhuis welcomes JAMES BLOOD ULMER & BLACK ROCK TRIO - an overwhelming combination of rock, jazz, funk and deep blues. The legendary guitarist and singer cut his teeth playing with Art Blakey and Ornette Coleman and is one of the originators of Free Funk.
ICP ORCHESTRA - LIVE AT THE BIMHUIS FROM SEPTEMBER 2 TO 5 (20.30, € 18 for each night, pass € 40 for four concerts) ‘Possibly the best jazz orchestra in the world' The new Bimhuis season starts with a series of four concerts by the legendary ICP Orchestra. ICP, founded over 40 years ago by Han Bennink and Misha Mengelberg, could be compared to a jazz orchestra from New Orleans crossing a busy street in New York. The ensemble, which operates somewhere between rudimentary jazz and contemporary improvisation, will basically play one big concert spread out over four evenings. This is the ultimate opportunity for fans and newbies alike to hear live performances of the most important compositions by pianist Misha Mengelberg and his band mates. With ICP Photographic exhibition by Pieter Boersma until 30 September 2009 at the Bimhuis café and: Wednesday 2 September: movie showing of STEIGERPIJP (Barbara Hin & Martin van der Veen) Thursday 3 September: music book presentation of GOEDEN DAGJES - 26 tunes by Misha Mengelberg Friday 4 September, after concert: DJ MICHAEL MOORE Saturday 5 September, after concert: JULES DEELDER DRAAIT! In collaboration with VPRO Jazz Live JAMES BLOOD ULMER & BLACK ROCK TRIO - LIVE AT THE BIMHUIS ON SUNDAY SEPTEMBER (20.30, € 20) The album Black Rock (1982) by James Blood Ulmer is a huge burst of positive energy, a chain of intense grooves, with which the guitarist/singer incited young musicians to transcend the boundaries between funk, jazz, blues and rock. Now, more than 25 years later, it is high time to overwhelm a new generation. ‘The missing link between Jimi Hendrix and Wes Montgomery on one hand, between P-Funk and Mississippi Fred McDowell on the other' (Village Voice).
