For the last seven months the Pure Markt http://www.puremarkt.nl/ has shown its face on a monthly basis (with exception of July), just past the Ringdijk in Oost-Watergraafsmeer in Park Frankendael.  This specialized market brings together local and regional, traditional, creative, sustainable food, drinks, and products.  The paths of the park are lined with not only stands, but also games and small carnival rides for the kids, picnic tables for enjoying the great treats, and live music.

The Pure Markt has not only become a place to pick up some traditionally smoked sausages but also to indulge in a unique and delicious brunch.  Visitors are encouraged to not just take their goods to-go but to stay and enjoy. A multi-course brunch awaits any takers with freshly shucked oysters and champagne for the first course; for the second course one has numerous options from handmade breads, baby quiches, olives and tapanades; the third course depends on your luck (new vendors are always popping up) handmade pizza is always available from the pizza bus, but you may also find market made paella, sausages, pastas, crepes or gourmet broodjes (sandwiches); for dessert you can enjoy handmade fudge, pastries and bonbons; and to wash it all down one shall not forget the various Dutch made beer and of course fresh espresso from the espresso kart. One trip to this market and you might be convinced that there really is food available without a side of potatoes available in Amsterdam.

Does good, quality street food really has a chance to evolve in Amsterdam? It is certainly the start of a small foodie revolution, where local food can be cherished, and one can directly support entrepreneurs in the region.  So, when you stop over bring an empty stomach and enjoy your very unique Sunday brunch in the open air at the Pure Markt.

The Pure Markt is held every last Sunday of the month from 11.00 - 18.00 at Park Frankendael, Watergraafsmeer.

A market with a twist

Amsterdam rarely has a shortage of creative artsy events. One could fill an entire weekend hopping from one private gallery to another, trolling shops for small trinkets, followed by nights of unique performances and parties at the many formalized squats and dive bars; but it has yet to have a regular market aimed specifically at a creative, artsy, pop scene.

Around the Block

by Mariah McKenna

What can one expect to find in a single city block? Can one block alone give a fair representation of all a city has to offer? And in a city as diverse and unique as Amsterdam, what are those inherent qualities that one longs to expose? These were just the sorts of questions I asked myself as I made my way out onto the streets of Amsterdam.
