They also compose their own fantastic repertoire', says trumpet player Dave Douglas. In the 1960s pianist Misha Mengelberg and drummer Han Bennink founded the Instant Composers Pool. This company evolved into an eccentric orchestra of virtuosos that operates between fundamental jazz structures and contemporary improvisation styles. Tonight ICP plays compositions by Mengelberg and by his favourite composers, Herbie Nichols and Thelonious Monk. Guest vocalist Fay Victor sings her own lyrics to the melodies of these composers. ‘Fay Victor has a rich, commanding voice that's matched by a sense of adventure' (JazzTimes). Chico is without a doubt the most important and versatile guitarist to have come from the Jerez school of flamenco. He was born in a gipsy family with a long tradition in guitar playing. He grew up on the patios in the heart Jerez ‘s gipsy quarter Santiago, feeding on the flamenco rhythms that he mixes so masterfully today. Together with Fernando de La Morena, one of Jerez's great veteran singers, and accompanied by the clapping hands of ‘El Bo' and ‘Chicaro', Moraito lets the Jerez rhythms swing and shine in this second edition of the concert series Intermezzo Flamenco. sunday 16 may 20:30 € 20 KONONO No. 1 (Congo) Pauline Mbuka Nsiala vocals, Makonda Mbuta likembé, Augustin Makuntima Mawangu likembé, Waku Menga vocals, Vincent Visi percussion, Ndofusu Mbiyavanga percussion The Congolese group Konono No. 1 creates exciting trance grooves with unusual instruments. The band was founded more than 25 years ago in the Congolese countryside, where they played traditional dance music. The migration to the city caused a problem: the band could not be heard above the din of urban noise. Their voices and instruments needed electric amplification, so the mbiras or thumb pianos were hooked up to microphones, made up of magnets and old car parts, that were plugged into amplifiers. This caused all kinds of sound distortion and unintended noise, but that gave the irresistibly funky music an edge similar to experimental rock and electro. ‘Feverishly pulsing percussion... this is music with its feet planted firmly on the street' (The Wire). monday 17 may 20:30 € 18 In collaboration with: Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ EVAN PARKER ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC ENSEMBLE BREAK-UPS 1 Walter Prati electronics/computer processing, Paul Lytton percussion/electronics, Marco Vecchi sound processing/sound projection 2 FURT: Richard Barrett, Paul Obermayer sampling keyboard/electronics 3 Joel Ryan sample & signal processing, Ichikawa Ko sho 4 Barry Guy bass, Lawrence Casserley signal processing 5 Evan Parker soprano sax/voice, Peter Evans (piccolo)trumpet, Richard Barrett, Paul Obermayer sampling keyboard/electronics 6 Agusti Fernandez (prepared) piano, Ned Rothenberg (bass)clarinet, Phil Wachsmann violin/electronics Evan Parker (1944) is a key figure in European improvised music and one of the most important and ground-breaking saxophonists since John Coltrane. With tenor sax, soprano sax and electronics, he has developed his own individual vocabulary, a central feature of which is inventing new playing techniques. Since the sixties, he has worked with countless musicians; from like-minded avant-garde performers such as Derek Bailey and Cecil Taylor to rock adventurers like Robert Wyatt and contemporary electronics pioneers such as Squarepusher. Parker's fascination with the electronic distortion of sound is shown in his Electro-Acoustic Ensemble. The members of this ensemble have each made their own name in the international avant-garde music scene. Half of the impressive group comprises musicians who improvise on acoustic instruments, and the other half are sound artists, who use electronics to directly process the passages improvised on stage. The result is a new sort of orchestral music with a panoramic scope; layered and with infinite mutations. On Monday May 17 the musicians of the Electro-Acoustic Ensemble will play in several compact line-ups together at the Bimhuis. The concert This Moment's Energy of the Evan Parker Electro-Acoustic Ensemble will take place on Tuesday May 18 in the large hall of Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ. tuesday 18 may 20:15 € 23 In collaboration with: Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ This concert will take place in the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ Concert hall EVAN PARKER ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC ENSEMBLE The Moment's Energy Evan Parker soprano sax, Barry Guy bass, Paul Lytton percussion, Agustí Fernandez piano, Phillip Wachsmann violin, Ned Rothenberg saxophone, Peter Evans trumpet, Ichikawa Ko sho, Walter Prati, Lawrence Casserley, Joel Ryan, Richard Barrett, Paul Obermayer processing, Marco Vecchi processing/main mix Ticket sales: http://www.muziekgebouw.nl/, 020-788 2000 See monday 17 may. tuesday 18 may free admission 20:00 WORKSHOP led by Arnold Dooyeweerd 22:00 SESSION (in the café) led by Jasper Blom, in collaboration with Conservatorium van Amsterdam thursday 20 may 20:30 € 20 KENNY GARRETT PRESENTS Kenny Garrett saxophone, Kona Khasu bass, Johnny Mercier hammond organ, Nathan Webb drums The last time that alto saxophone player Kenny Garrett set foot on the Bimhuis stage was in 1986, when he performed with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers.
