Amsterdam Spoke introduces the Bimhuis Program for October 2010

The Bimhuis in Amsterdam is a Jazz concert House which provides a perception on Dutch and international music in over 300 concerts which are held annually. The visitors can experience and enjoy a variety of Jazz and improvised music.

The focus of the Bimhuis is on new developments but it also presents a considerable variety of more mainstream music. Amsterdam Spoke Magazine is offering you the detailed program of the Bimhuise for the months of October and November. Enjoy it!

Craig Taborn Trio

Piano and synthesizer improviser Craig Taborn is counted among the most multitalented American jazz musicians of his generation. In the last ten years he has appeared on more than 50 albums. Visit the Bimhuis on the 15th of October and enjoy pure Jazz with Craig and adventurous crossover with Detroit DJ Carl Craig and adventurous improvisations with Time Berne. The ticket is 20 Euro.

SOO CHO Quarter Featuring Angelo Verploegen

Korean pianist Soo Cho palys ‘sensitive, delicate jazz in which she effectively makes use of space and time’ (NRC) Great influence on her compositions are piano-improvisers like Keith Jarret and Enrico Pieranunzi. Soo Cho has been playing since she was three years old. After her classical piano and flute students in Seoul she moved to the Netherlands in 2001, where she dedicated herself to jazz. Her quartet with trumpet player Angelo Verploegen of Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw fame, presents its new CD Little Prince tonight. The ticket is 15 Euro

Bourne/Kane/Davis& AB BAARS, LAURENT BLONDIAU

There is no doubt that Matthew Bourne is a controversial musician. His piano playing can be exceptionally physical but very lyrical at the same time. That is why he has been often compared to Cecil Taylor. But Bourne often uses samples, such as looped experts from the Simpsons. Bourne’s style is edgy and intense with a hint of swing.  The ticket is 15 Euro.

Konrad Koselleck Big Band with Jeroen Zilstra and Lydia Van Dam

Konrad Kosselleck’s big band is something else: an adventurous combination of jazz, cabaret, musical, pop, rock, funk, Latin and even classical music. ‘Fabulous, young, sexy musicians. You don`t need more to put on a fantastic show’ (de Volkskrant). The ticket is 15 Euro.

Tyshawn Sorey Quartet

During his previous gig at the Bimhuis, with the Steve Lehman Octet, Tyshawn Sorey proved himself as a fabulous drummer, combining ferocity and beauty in his playing. In his own compositions Sorey de-emphasizes solos in favor of ensemble playing and collective improvisation.

Hyperrhythm Festival – Oval, Phonophani, Mike Slott, DJ Juha

‘’New Electronic music composed in a real time”

Bimhuis and Viral Radio present Hyperrhythm, a program with innovative electronic music. The first edition of Hyperrhythm took place at this year`s North Sea Jazz Festival. This night Oval, Phonophani, Mike Slott, DJ Juha will play new work. Sound artist Espen Sommer Eide makes his solo debut in The Netherlands as Phonophani. Box office and Café will open at 20:00. The ticket is 16 Euros.

Portico Quartet

The portico Quartet consists of four twenty- somethings from London, whose music strongly evokes images. Saxophone player Jack Wyllie uses electronics to enhance his sound and percussionist Nick Mulvey regularly plays hang, a cross between steel pan and gong. The ticket is 15 Euro.

Dave Holland Quintet

Dave Holland Is among the most important innovators of the double bass and the most valued composing bass player since Charles Mingus. In the late 1960s he unleashed a revolution with Miles Davis on albums like Bitches’ Brew and In A Silent Way. The ticket for this evening is 28 euro.

Tom Rainey Trio Feat. Ingrid Laubrock, Mary Halvorson

Drummer and ultimate sideman Tom Rainey is always full of surprises. He played with Tim Berne, Fred Hersh and Carmen McRae, among many others.Now he finally has his own band which is an improvised trio with two major talents. The ticket is 15 euro.

Jason Moran & the Bandwagon

Pianist and composer Jason Moran is an important exponent of the current jazz generation, an innovator that treats music from all directions and periods with equal respect. The ticket is 20 euro.
