Amsterdam is great for beer lovers and wine connoisseurs but every now and then a girl craves her Martini. This girl in particular craves a creative flair in hers. There is only so many dirty and straight ups that I can take. Sometimes I need a Martini with a twist, lucky for me that I stumbled (literally) upon Club Roque.
This innovative bar opened in the spring of 2008 and is an undiscovered gem located around the corner from Rembrandtplein (Amstel 178). This modern bar put the fun back into “funky”. The interior décor is the brainchild of the famous designer, Eric Kuster, of Bar Arc and Jimmy Woo fame. It oozes all of the au courant style in the way that only European clubs can do.
They have a DJ spinning, every night starting at midnight, a wide range of 80’s, 90’s, and house music. DJ Fabian kindly takes requests and is only too eager to play any and all Justin Timberlake related songs. Don’t judge me, my friend loves JT, not me! I still think his voice is going to change once he becomes a real man. Speaking of men, this bar is an open minded, modern type of crowd so prepare to see lots of gender friendly couples. Trust me, if you want to take a walk on the wilder side, this place is the mildest of all Amsterdam bars to do so especially if you get here right at opening time, 9:00 pm, Wednesday-Sunday. Roque is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Need another incentive to be adventurous? How about FIVE EURO cocktails? The experienced staff makes out of the ordinary cocktails that are only FIVE euros on Wednesdays all night and every other night from 9:00pm until midnight! The bartenders really know how to make martini’s just like I like them…full of alcohol mixed in with some exotic flavor. I advocate getting the Roquetini. It comes with a sidecar of Champagne. There’s nothing like a fine Martini accompanied by a sidecar of champagne to make you feel like a Rock star. I actually had one friend request that I NOT review this bar because the drinks were so good that she wanted to keep them a secret. However, you know me, I like to spread non-sobriety for the discerning drinkers as well.
I’ll give this bar 4 out of 5 Tulips, with 1 being the worst and 5 being the best. Want to experience Amsterdam’s nightlife in a harmless but entertaining setting without spending a fortune on watered-down cocktails? Then I suggest that you get your rocks off by partying like a Rock star at Club Roque. Not so ready to party like a Rock star? Then drop by Roque at 9:00 pm for an after dinner cocktail. I promise, your taste buds and your wallet will thank you after the first sip.
